What are dentures made of?

At Right Dentures in Canberra we only use the best standard of materials to create our custom-made dentures, so you can rest assured you're getting a top-quality product. We recommend replacing your dentures every five to 10 years, depending on personal wear and tear, and have answered a few common questions about dentures below.

What are full or partial dentures?

A denture is a removable mouth piece designed to replace missing teeth and can be either a 'full denture' or 'partial denture' depending on your requirements.

Partial dentures: normally have some retentive components like metal clasps to hold the denture in place. The element which holds all the components together is called the major connector.

A metal partial denture: when the major connector of the partial denture is made of metal.

What are the advantages of metal partial dentures compared to acrylic dentures?

  • less bulky
  • more stable
  • more comfortable
  • less likely to break
  • more hygienic and easier to clean
  • less likely to impair speech, as it is occupies less space

What is the metal alloy used in partial dentures and can they become rusty?

It is made mainly of a cobalt and chrome alloy specifically designed not to rust or change in the mouth environment. In rare cases where the patient is allergic to cobalt or chrome, titanium alloys can be used.

Is it possible to add a tooth to a metal denture in the future?

In most cases, an addition can be made to metal partials, although it is highly recommended that you consider this option during your original denture design.

How frequently should a denture be replaced?

We recommend replacing dentures every five to 10 years, based on your denture materials and care, but it is different in every case, depending on your diet, the speed of shrinkage of your jaw bones and, most importantly, the wear strength of the artificial teeth used to make the denture.
